We do occupational therapy a little differently…

At Occupational Therapy for Children, play underpins everything we do.

Scientists have determined that it takes approximately 400 repetitions to create a new synapse in the brain, unless it is done with play, in which case it takes between 10 and 20 repetitions.

The magic happens when our therapists make this play purposeful and effective.

Ayres Sensory Integration at OTFC

Sensory experiences, like touch, movement, sound, and sight, are how we take in information about the world around us. Our brain organises and makes sense of this information through a process called Sensory Integration. This process helps build important skills for learning, movement, and behaviour.

Ayres Sensory Integration® (ASI) Therapy, developed by Dr. A. Jean Ayres, is designed to help young people who have trouble processing sensory information. This therapy helps them better understand and respond to the sensory experiences they encounter every day.

At OTFC, we use this proven, evidence-based approach to guide our therapy. Our therapists follow ASI® guidelines to make sure the therapy we provide is effective and focused on clear goals. OTFC therapists engage in ongoing professional development which is targeted towards a therapeutic approach that adheres to best occupational therapy practice guidelines.

While ASI® is the core of our therapy, we also use other evidence-based frameworks and strategies to ensure your young person’s development and independence is supported.

Understanding the Role of Mental Health in Development

Many young people experience mental health differences, such as feelings of anxiousness, decreased motivation, low self-esteem, and overwhelm. This can be part of their disposition or linked with developmental differences such as neurodivergent profiles, and can impact on their overall wellbeing and capacity to perform everyday activities.

Our unique approach combines sensory integration, functional skills, and mental health supports. By addressing these three areas within our therapy, we can help young people improve their abilities and wellbeing in a way that fits their unique needs, enhancing occupational performance.

Our aim, in focusing on these aspects, is to help your young person thrive in their everyday life, giving them the tools to succeed at home, in school, and beyond.

How Our Approach Can Help Your Young Person
